Arbutus Vancouver did not start out as we know it today. It started its life as a low-lying marsh land called Asthma Flats. It was full of nature, fish filled streams and had zero record of inhabitants.

This neighborhood struggled in the early days to find its identity. Initially turned over from the province to CPR (Canadian Pacific Railway) as part of a 5,200 Acre parcel in 1888. The land was then passed between municipalities, first South Vancouver until 1908. Then it became part of the community of Point Grey & then finally settling in the municipality of Vancouver in 1929. 1912 to the 1930’s brought the first wave of development to Arbutus Vancouver. Predominantly middle-class homes were built in the area of “Uplands”, now known as Mackenzie Heights. This development boom was triggered by the passage of the B.C Electric’s Interurban railway line. This line that passed through Kerrisdale, down Arbutus Street boarding the Arbutus neighborhood connecting Steveston to Downtown Vancouver. The railway was replaced by Trolly Busses in 1952. During the 1940’s & 1950’s sand was brought up from False Creek to fill the low areas of the neighborhood for the construction of more houses, schools and shops.
