Mackenzie Heights is one of the few neighborhoods that is almost all exclusively a residential area. 99% residential single family detached homes with a couple of parks for the kids & dog walkers out there. At the intersection of West 33rd Avenue & Macdonald Street however you do have a few small stores for all the necessities (coffee / Groceries etc). At this location you also have a couple of low-rise residential buildings & some townhomes. Mackenzie Heights is a perfectly quaint little West Side residential pocket which is most desired by families.
Once known as the Uplands area to the community of Arbutus Ridge Vancouver, Mackenzie Heights was the first residential settlement area of the Arbutus Vancouver community. This area filled up with Middle-class homes between 1912 & 1930. The Mackenzie Heights development progress was part of a larger westward development expansion. This followed the growth patterns dictated by the availability of land and the increasing demand for residential areas outside the city centre.
The area was named after Sir Alexander Mackenzie, the Scottish-Canadian explorer & fur trader. He came to fame for being the first to complete the overland crossing of Canada to reach the Pacific Ocean in 1793. He apparently missed meeting George Vancouver by just 48 days….
The layout and architecture of Mackenzie Heights reflect the early 20th-century ideals of suburban development at the time. The neighborhood features a mix of housing styles, from Tudor and Craftsman to more modern renditions. These homes, often spacious and with generous manicured Lots & gardens, were designed to cater to the burgeoning middle and upper-middle-class families seeking a respite from urban congestion. Homes in the area typically sits on Lots between 3,900 SqFt – 9,500 SqFt.
